Course: Career Exploration
Client: Career Services @ Utah State University
Medium: Canvas LMS
This is a course template I re-designed for the Career Services Dept. at USU. The original course was several pages of text with no clear objectives and very little organization of the information.
The first thing I did was go the the Career Services website to get a better feel for what the Department does. While there, I found the site was well organized using the logos seen above on the front page. I used these logos and colors to organize the course. By breaking up the information into smaller segments, the learner is able to better digest the info without going into cognitive overload. I then created space in the modules for the videos they were working on.
The key to the re-design was spending time with the Instructor, and teaching him how to add content and maintain the course. Without this last step, the course stays static. By involving the Instructor, the course can evolve to the needs of the Career Services and their learners.

Course: Basic Selling Skills
Client: Housewares Retailer
Medium: easygenerator
This is a course I designed from scratch, using the Dick and Carey version of the ADDIE learning model. The course is used to train new retail employees in Basic Selling Skills. It helps the new employee develop a framework for selling any item in the store. These selling principles are universal, and any product can be plugged into the framework and be sold successfully. This particular retailer sells thousands of different items. It would take years to train on each item individually.
For this course I gave the objective of each module up front, letting the learner know what they should be able to do when finished. The flow of each module is: Objective--> Content --> Knowledge Check. Halfway through the course there is a comprehensive Knowledge Check and then another comprehensive Knowledge Check to wrap up the course.
This is the course that made me realize how important all the steps in the development process are. ADDIE, SAM, or whatever, giving each step equal importance will always lead to a better finished product.
Feel free to click on the picture and learn a few Basic Selling skills.
